The ABC

The ABC had their independent journalist write their column on Mr. Campbell after Sevens exposure of his double life. Their content was more focused on Channel Seven’s justification on airing the news rather than the events happening in Mr. Campbell’s life. There is a mention of some important facts such as him resigning and government reshuffle. This news content I believe has been influence by the fact that ABC is owned and funded by the government (ABC website) and so would try to remove itself from being the focus of the content by giving it in another angle.

The angle the ABC has taken on the scandal was the use of gossip in controlling behaviour within the society and providing political sanction. Channel Seven received a lot of negative remarks on the publicising of the private affairs of Mr. Campbell. The public rebuked the invasion of privacy by the media. The ABC reports Channel Sevens defence on the matter which also serves a characteristic of gossip to provide ground for protecting ones interest (in this case Seven news’ interest) where open confrontation is too risky as Klein’s study shows.
